Hello Friends!
Can you believe it? I’ve actually committed to something… posting on substack consistently since February of this year!
I started posting on substack earlier this year for exposure and practice and I’m unsure if the exposure part is gaining momentum but the practice piece for sure is! Writing is hard *ish that they did not teach us in Dietitian school. And although my pieces are a bit wobbly, I’ve really appreciated the feedback and discussion amongst my personal connections on here!
As stated at the beginning of this year, I have no truth path for this newsletter. Trying to commit to “niche” side projects outside of work has never worked for me. Instead, this newsletter will continue to focus on whatever food topics I’m feeling. I was about to provide a list of possibilities but it felt too limiting.
In the new year I will start occasionally publishing “paid subscriber only” posts but fear not! I’ve provided complimentary “paid” subscriptions to all my personal-ish connections (thanks substack!) All other free subscribers are more than welcome to pledge a subscription :)
I’ll likely be taking the month of December off of the stack. But if you’re interested in re-visiting some topics, below are my most popular posts of 2024, and those that I wish got a wee bit more attention.
Most Popular Posts of the Year
I Don't Give a **** "What a 40-Year-Old Physician Eats on $850k in California's Bay Area"
Ya’ll. Recently I subscribed to Bon Appetit because I needed to switch up my meal game and was tempted by their $1/month subscription. Then I received an email titled “What a 40-Year-Old Physician Eats on $850k in California’s Bay Area.” I wanted to throw my phone against the wall.
The Feminine Urge to Repress Sexuality By Dieting
“If I allowed myself to eat my favorite foods, I would be eating crap all the time.”
Kate Moss is Not Responsible for Your Negative Body Image
Hip bones that stick out of low-rise jeans. Rib lines that run parallel to hollowed cheekbones. Legs that resemble arms. Thong straps that search for fat to grip onto. So many of us Millennial women don’t need to be reminded of the images of heroin chic that informed our body image.
Posts That Could Get a Bit More Love
Weeping on the Laugavegur
Despite identifying as secular for most of my life, I’ve always been a bit jealous of those who have religion. For the past year on the nose I’ve felt untethered. The feeling has likely been brewing for much longer but I couldn’t find the words until there was much less anchoring me to one place. There doesn’t seem to be any purpose in life other than t…
Food Restriction In Response To Global Crisis
In the past several months, a TikTok has circulated around the internet suggesting that the body ideal tends to slim down in response to global crisis’. In the last 10 years, the American female body ideal gained some weight- a noticeable difference from a rocky decade in which heroin chic reigned. But in the past year or so, waistbands have dropped, an…
Let Me Have My Hunger
In the 11th grade, I learned how to make truffles with Oreos and cream cheese. I would eat a dozen before I’d feel remotely full. Each rich truffle felt like a drop in the ocean that was my stomach. The only sensation that would stop me from eating was the growing, gooey lump of cream cheese in my throat. Then a warm blanket would slowly pull itself acr…
