A Spoonful of Stories

Some food. Some stories. Some food stories.

This publication explores the intimate experiences that impact our relationship with food including feminism, sexuality, food systems, food justice, nutrition, physiology, and more. Its purpose is to provide education, connection, and a push for those in need of healing.

The purpose of my work is to share experiences of humanity through food. Food is not just something that sustains us, but that has spent millennia developing alongside us. Its history tells a story of humanity. We have used it as both a weapon and tool for prosperity. It is deeply political. But our primary relationship with food is physiological. For many folks, these two factors are at odds with one another and reconciling them is painful if not disorienting.

My work is the publication, but the stories are not mine. They are the stories written by humanity and nature. This work has been largely influenced by the work of Wendell Berry, the farmers, food producers, and dietitians I’ve worked alongside throughout the years, and most importantly my past clients. Their resilience has driven my curiosity. Their desperation has made me search for answers that I was told there were none to. Their healing has given me hope I didn’t know existed. These words are theirs.

Sharing stories is healing. So many of us think that we are alone in our experiences, especially in the darkest corners of our lives. But our experiences are universal. They are written into our code. Although that may be a scary reality to some, understanding the web the makes us has given me and so many of my clients agency and bravery.

You thought you were reading about food? Didn’t you? You will. A Spoonful of Stories explores the depth and breadth of our relationship with food as it is so much more than chemicals that we consume.

XOXO,

Stephanie
