Part of what inspired this poem is my discomfort with the tendency to retreat inside during the winter when there is still so much that is still living outdoors. I’ve heard a lot of folks say they are embracing winter/the darkness by retreating indoors while they are actually retreating to artificial heat and light. This made me question what retreat, recovery, rest, and introspection actually means. What would we learn if we stopped relying on illumination for guidance and discovery? I hope that other folks can be curious about what they can find in the true dark and coldness outside.
